What Is MetaSweep?

MetaSweep is a privacy focused metadata management tool for macOS. Every photo you take or create carries invisible data embedded inside the file. This can include where you were standing, what device you used, and even which AI model generated the image. MetaSweep gives you full visibility and full control over that data before your files are shared, posted, or uploaded anywhere.

General

What is metadata and why does it matter?
Metadata is hidden data embedded inside your image files. A JPEG can contain your exact GPS location, the make and model of your phone, timestamps, and sometimes even AI generation parameters. This data travels with the file whenever you share, post, or send it, often without you realizing it.
Does MetaSweep upload my files to the cloud?
No. All scanning and cleaning happens entirely on your Mac using a local processing engine. Your files never leave your machine.
Which file types does MetaSweep support?
MetaSweep supports JPEG, PNG, HEIC, TIFF, and RAW formats. The Format Converter tool lets you convert between JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and HEIC.
Is my original file safe?
By default, MetaSweep offers three output modes: overwrite the original, create a new file with a "-cleaned" suffix, or save to a dedicated subfolder. We recommend using one of the non-destructive modes and keeping backups of originals.
Does MetaSweep work offline?
Yes, completely. No internet connection is required for any feature.

Privacy & Security

Can MetaSweep see my photos?
No. The app reads metadata — the structural wrapper around your image — using a local command-line engine. Your actual image content is never transmitted, analyzed by a remote server, or stored by Miller Matrix.
What is C2PA / Content Credentials?
C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) is an open standard used by cameras, editing tools, and AI generators to embed a signed record of a file's history. MetaSweep can read and remove these markers. This is particularly important for journalists, lawyers, and anyone working with sensitive visual evidence.
What are AI signatures?
When AI tools like Stable Diffusion or Midjourney generate an image, they often embed parameters into the file's metadata — including the prompt, seed, model name, and generator version. MetaSweep detects these patterns and can remove them.

Features & Usage

What is the difference between Clean and EXIF Editor?
The Clean feature removes metadata in bulk using a removal profile — great for batch processing many files quickly. The EXIF Editor gives you fine-grained control, letting you edit or delete individual tags one at a time without touching others.
What are presets?
Presets (also called Removal Profiles) are saved configurations that define which metadata groups to remove. The built-in "Remove All" preset strips everything. Pro users can create custom presets — for example, a "Keep Copyright" preset that removes location data but preserves IPTC copyright fields.
Can I export a report of what was found?
Yes. The Scan Report feature generates HTML or CSV exports showing every file in your session, how many tags were found, which are sensitive, and whether GPS or C2PA data is present.
Does the Geotag Editor require an internet connection?
No. Maps are loaded via Apple's MapKit framework, which uses the same offline-capable mapping system as the Maps app. However, tile loading may be degraded on a slow or no connection.
